Sieging a province adds 1% attrition no matter what, which would increase our example to 2% - it all adds up. 4,000 die. i cant confirm that but i was always told cavallery helps with finishing off enemy armies that are demoralized and running away. However, if you have cavalry ideas and no infantry ones, it would be perfectly fine to go higher, although I wouldn't be going above a 3:1 infantry to cavalry ratio. They take just as many casualties as infantry in most battles, so adding cavalry to your merc-infantry frontline is a quick way to deplete your manpower.

Either way, being on the back line means they won't take damage until they are forced to the front by loss of infantry. You're still looking at an army stack of around 45, while sacrificing artillery support if you fight alone.

Even there, they are only marginally better. 5:1:3 feels like a good ratio, so something like 15:2:8. But I rarely goes above 4 early unless I merge armies or send them into same battle.
