Gilling Castle is a grade I listed castle near Gilling East, North Yorkshire, England (grid reference. 166-9, https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1001064, Historic England Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest, The Gardens of Britain 5: Yorkshire and Humberside, The Buildings of England: Yorkshire The North Riding, North Yorks Dales Cottage Gardens, Arkengarthdale, The National Heritage List for England: Register of Parks and Gardens. The vendor, however, retained the panelling and glass of the Great Chamber and sold it separately. Immediately south of the Castle and east of the viewing platform steeply falling ground is terraced down, each terrace being supported by a brick retaining wall with a low parapet. Today, the castle is home to St Martin's Ampleforth, the prep school for Ampleforth College. The gardens around the house are approximately 30 hectares. The room is wainscoted in English oak divided in height into three large panels in the four corners. The lozenges are filled with interlacing geometrical patterns in ebony and holly.

To each Wapentake is given a tree and the coats of all gentlemen then living in that district are hung on its branches.

The castle underwent major changes to its interior and exterior in the 18th century and it remained the principal seat of the Hylton family until the death of the last Baron in 1746.

Lytes Cary is a manor house with associated chapel and gardens near Charlton Mackrell and Somerton in Somerset, England. Gilling Castle (listed grade I) is a C14 tower house with late C16 alterations which was extensively remodelled, with the creation of a new west front, in the early C18. On the death of Mrs Barnes (Lavinia Fairfax) in 1885, this branch of the family became extinct and the castle, after passing through several hands, was bought by Ampleforth Abbey in 1929. Gilling Castle was originally the home of the de Etton family, who appeared there at the end of the 12th century.
