Fortunately, the greater Elk Grove area has several pioneering cemeteries with much known history.
The earliest record of the Galt-Arno Cemetery shows that a baby, Louie Davis, was buried here in 1857. A few are Hicksville, Sloughhouse, Michigan Bar, Union, Point Pleasant, Bellvue, Kilgore cemeteries, etc. Dissenters). It’s just a tiny patch of ground, but family members have painstakingly preserved it through the years. A new I.O.O.F. Below is an extract from a joint report from the Leeds Civic Trust and the newly-formed Friends of Beckett Street Cemetery, which makes clear that the heritage value of the cemetery was a core aspect of their opposition to its ‘redevelopment’: It seems possible – though further research would be necessary – that the loss of the General Cemetery twenty-years previous influenced the nature of the opposition to the plans for Beckett Street and, especially, that stress on the historic value of the site. The original brickwork surrounding it has is broken and scattered and the plot riddled by rodent holes.
The thrust of that talk was to lay out a brief historical chronology of cemeteries in Leeds, illustrated with relevant books and other stock items held at the Central Library. Only a handful were built across the 19th-century, however.

At the same time, a resolution was passed by the County to form the Galt-Arno Cemetery District, a political subdivision of the County of Sacramento. In the collections at the Central Library, we find a small brochure published just five years after the opening of that cemetery in 1875, setting out the ‘Tables of Fees and Charges, with Rules and Regulations’: What this pamphlet does not reveal, however, is the extent to which issues around burial fees were as present in Headingley as elsewhere in Leeds (as we have seen). It seems that the cemeteries of the Sacramento Delta towns did not allow the burial of Chinese immigrants, so residents who died there were buried inn the Franklin Cemetery. We started this brief history by stating that the story began in 1842 with the development of the Leeds Cemetery, also known as Beckett Street Cemetery. Joining with 21 VA veterans cemeteries located at hospitals and nursing homes, the National Cemetery System comprised 103 cemeteries after the transfer.
