BUTLER: I'd wanted to make music for a long time. So I invited him to New York, because he’s from St. Louis, to see if he wanted to write some songs. Richard Butler: Well, we’d just finished a long tour, and the idea of going back in straightaway to record felt awful. We drew a lot from the energy of that, I think, as well. BUTLER: Why are we looking back? Often we were very drunk, and the whole scene was a bit chaotic. And for a while, being a band that was basically a guitar band, was a bad thing in England.
